Drummer Dave Abbruzzese gets writing credit for this because it wasn't published until 1993 (when all members were getting equal credit), even though it was written a year before he joined the band."Hold On" - Previously unreleased. TEN outtake. The booklet incorrectly lists this as a V's outtake."Footsteps" - Originally from the "Jeremy" single. Recorded live during Pearl Jam's appearance on Rockline on May 11, 1992. The harmonica was not present on the B-side version. The song's music, with different lyrics, also appeared on Temple Of The Dog's self-titled LP under the name "Times of Trouble"."Brother" - Previously unreleased TEN outtake. All vocals were removed from the original outtake version, making this version of the song an instrumental. McCready recorded a new lead guitar part for this version. This selection is by no means comprehensive/exhaustive - just a compilation of my favourites from around the time.
We could argue about who should & who shouldn't be included eg. I've completely left Mudhoney & Green River off - due to my own personal tastes - I just never liked them! Worth pointing out here too - Malfunkshun were admittedly 100% the early pioneers of the sound/genre, that's largely due to the combination of the 2 Woods... but their sound was mostly just not 'my thing'... they are growing on me tho!
IMHO: 1989-1994 had the BEST 'homogenous' Grunge tracks (if there ever WAS such a thing)...
When you hear interviews where even Alice In Chains admit they were "created' by record execs" then surely you HAVE to question the best of the best's motives...?
Although Stone Gossard & Jeff Ament's original band (GR/MLB) were certainly flambuoyant, they appear to me to have been very fame-hungry... so, if Pearl Jam had it's origins in fame-seeking, then surely this makes you wonder about the 'alternative-ness' of the WHOLE SCENE... it certainly does for me!
Post '94/'95 the list moves on to the 'band wagon-y', but 'alright-sounding' groups & tunes with their nods-to & even blatant-copies-of the originals (Silverchair, Candlebox & Bush to name a few).
My reasons for including so many Soundgarden, PJ and some AIC - others were just not raw enough for me - these 3 originated and encapsulated 'the sound' so perfectly, there'd be NOTHING left if they were omitted. Truth be told, I'm a "Take 'em or leave 'em" Nirvana fan - I just don't think they lived up to all the hype! That's why I've been picky with their tunes. A LOT of AIC got pretty dark, so I've been picky there too. Soundgarden & (early) Pearl Jam ticked all my boxes!
Anyways... enjoy my selection of music from the BEST era in modern music!
